Ru Cha Mangrove

The only remaining primary mangrove on the Tam Giang lagoon, turning gold in autumn.

Ru Cha is the only patch of primary mangrove left on the whole Tam Giang lagoon system, only a few dozen hectares. The cha trees grow dense, their roots netted under the mud, and a narrow concrete path runs through the middle of the forest out to a watch hut at the lagoon's edge. What gets it talked about is colour: from around September to November the leaves turn gold and then copper red all at once, the whole wood changing over a few weeks before going green again. Outside that season Ru Cha is a quiet place with almost nobody in it, about fifteen kilometres from Hue.
