Tomb of Tu Duc — Thua Thien Hue

The loveliest of the Nguyen tombs — a poet's garden the emperor used while still alive.

Tu Duc had his tomb built while still on the throne and used it as a second palace: he came here to read, write poetry, fish on Luu Khiem lake and watch performances at the Minh Khiem theatre, the oldest surviving theatre in Vietnam. So the place has none of the cold grandeur of a mausoleum and feels instead like a garden: pines, a lotus lake, stone paths winding between nearly fifty structures. There is one bitter detail: the stele here was composed by the emperor himself, over four thousand characters long, and in it he sets out his own failings — and to this day nobody knows where he is actually buried.
