An Dinh Palace

An Dinh Palace — Thua Thien Hue

Lưu Ly · Public domain

Khai Dinh's European-style palace, its ceilings and walls covered in murals.

An Dinh shows a different face of the late Nguyen court: instead of tiled roofs and courtyards, a three-storey European building with moulded columns, ceramic-inlay ornament and a spiral staircase. Khai Dinh built it as his private residence, and after his death Empress Nam Phuong and Emperor Bao Dai lived here for a time following the abdication. The best thing here is in the reception room on the first floor: six large murals depicting the six Nguyen imperial tombs, buried under whitewash for decades and only recovered during a recent restoration.
