Truong Tien Bridge

Truong Tien Bridge — Thua Thien Hue

Lưu Ly · Public domain

Six spans and twelve sections of steel over the Perfume River, changing colour all night.

Truong Tien has crossed the Perfume River since the end of the nineteenth century, built by Gustave Eiffel's firm, and the people of Hue count it in a set phrase: six spans, twelve sections. The bridge was brought down twice — once in 1946 and again during the Tet offensive of 1968 — and rebuilt both times to the same shape. By day it is an ordinary grey steel bridge; after dark, LED lighting washes the whole frame and cycles through colours, reflected in the water. Walking across it in the evening is something nearly every visitor to Hue does.
