Thuan An is Hue's sea mouth — where water from the Tam Giang lagoon runs out into the East Sea, and also the closest beach to the city, barely ten kilometres away. The sand here is coarser and the surf stronger than at other central beaches, so it feels less like a resort beach and more like a local one: in the afternoon people from Hue ride out to swim, eat seafood at shacks put up on the sand, and go home. Historically the Thuan An mouth was a key defensive point for the citadel, and it is where the French fleet landed in 1883 before the court had to sign a treaty.
