Kh'leang is the oldest Khmer pagoda in Soc Trang, and stepping inside means stepping into a different aesthetic from Vietnamese temples: the sanctuary is raised high on a platform, its three tiered roofs sweep upward, and the eaves rest on Krud figures — half human, half bird — alongside Kayno goddesses. Inside, the walls are painted end to end with scenes from the Buddha's life in the characteristic gold and red. The courtyard is shaded by sugar palms and hosts Chol Chnam Thmay and Ok Om Bok each year. The pagoda also teaches Khmer script and Pali to young monks, so on ordinary days recitation drifts out from the back halls.
