My Son Sanctuary — Quang Nam

The religious centre of the Champa kingdom for nearly a thousand years, in a valley closed by mountains.

In a bowl of a valley ringed by mountains, Cham kings built temples continuously from the 4th to the 13th century — nearly a thousand unbroken years, rare anywhere in South-East Asia. My Son honoured Shiva under the name Bhadresvara, and each reign added a new tower group, so walking the site means walking across centuries of architecture layered on one another. The building technique still astonishes: bricks fitted so tightly that the joints are barely visible, and nobody is certain how the Cham bonded them. War destroyed many groups, above all the once-tallest A1 tower; what remains was inscribed by UNESCO as World Heritage in 1999.
