Eight islands off Hoi An, a World Biosphere Reserve and the first place in Vietnam to ban plastic bags.

Twenty minutes by speedboat from Cua Dai brings you to the Cham Islands, eight of them, the largest being Hon Lao. The water is clear enough to see the coral a few metres down, and snorkelling at Bai Xep or Bai Chong is what everyone comes for. On the island stand Hai Tang Pagoda from the 18th century, old Cham wells that hold fresh water year-round, and the birds' nest concessions — a trade dating to the Nguyen lords. Most striking, since 2009 the whole island has banned plastic bags, the first place in Vietnam to manage it and to have kept it up ever since.

Bring your own water bottle — single-use plastic is restricted on the island.
Seas are rough from October to December and boats often stop; check before booking.
