Old-growth forest on limestone at the southern tip of the Hoang Lien range, dense with caves and Dao villages.
Xuan Son is a surviving pocket of old forest where the Hoang Lien Son range drops toward the midlands. The limestone is riddled with caves — Lang, Na, Tho Than — several still carrying underground streams. Above ground stand chò chỉ hardwoods, bamboo groves and ancient fern beds sheltering silver pheasant, grey langur and hundreds of butterfly species. In the valley sit the Dao villages of Du and Coi, where you can sleep in a stilt house and eat multi-spurred chicken — the nine-spurred bird of the Son Tinh – Thuy Tinh legend, still raised in Phu Tho today.
