Mother Au Co Temple

A Later Le dynasty temple on the Thao River honouring Au Co — the mother of the hundred-egg origin myth.

If the Hung Temple honours Lac Long Quan and the Hung Kings, the temple at Hien Luong on the Thao River belongs to Mother Au Co. Built in the Later Le period and shaded by an ancient banyan, it holds a seated statue of the Mother on a gilded throne, counted among the finest surviving wood carvings of Vietnamese folk sculpture. Legend has it that after parting from Lac Long Quan, Au Co led fifty children into the mountains and halted on this very ground. On the seventh day of the first lunar month the 'Descent of the Fairy' festival opens, with palanquin processions and sweet cakes made by the village's unmarried women.
