A bird garden in a karst valley, tens of thousands returning to roost at dusk.

Thung Nham lies in a valley closed in by limestone ranges, and the thing worth coming for is the hour: from about four or five in the afternoon, tens of thousands of egrets, night herons, grey herons and teal fly in and cover the trees on the island in the middle of the water, their calls filling the valley. Visitors are taken by small boat close to the bird island and the engine is cut so as not to alarm them. Around forty species live here year-round, with numbers rising sharply in migration season. Beyond the bird garden the valley also holds But cave, a walking banyan tree and forest trails over the karst.
