Five hundred stone steps up Ngoa Long mountain — the most famous panorama over Tam Coc.

The name refers to a cave at the foot of the hill, but almost nobody comes to Mua Cave for the cave: they come to climb. About five hundred stone steps run steeply to the top of Ngoa Long mountain, where there is a statue of Quan Am and a stone dragon curling along the ridge. From there you look down on the whole Tam Coc valley: the Ngo Dong river winding between the fields, sheer limestone blocks scattered across it, and in harvest season the entire valley turned gold. This is the photograph of Ninh Binh you have seen somewhere. The five hundred steps are real and steep; do not climb at midday.

Travel tips

Climb early or late — the steps have no shade and are very steep.
The steps are narrow and slippery in rain; wear grippy shoes and do not push near the top.
