Am Tien Cave

A green pool in a bowl of karst — where King Dinh once kept tigers to punish criminals.

From the main road a passage runs through the base of the mountain into a bowl closed on all sides by rock walls, with a still green pool in the middle — online it goes by the name Tuyet Tinh Coc. Its history is not romantic: according to the chronicles King Dinh Tien Hoang kept tigers and leopards in this hollow and had serious offenders thrown down to them, which is why it also carries the name Ao Giai, the crocodile pond. After King Dinh's death, Empress Duong Van Nga withdrew to the pagoda and cave at Am Tien beside the pool, and her grave is still in this enclosure. One small bowl holds both those stories at once.
