Bai Dinh Temple

Bai Dinh Temple — Ninh Binh

Cosinus01 · CC0

The largest pagoda complex in Vietnam, with a three-kilometre corridor of five hundred arhats.

Bai Dinh is two separate things: the old pagoda up on the mountain, dating from the eleventh century and tied to the monk Nguyen Minh Khong; and the new complex begun in 2003 below, so large you take an electric buggy between points. The new part holds a string of records: an eighty-tonne bronze Maitreya on the hilltop, a bell tower with a thirty-six-tonne bell, and two parallel arhat corridors running nearly three kilometres, holding five hundred stone figures, each with a different posture and face. Walking the whole complex takes half a day, and it is worth knowing in advance that most of what you see is only twenty years old.
