The busiest international crossing on the northern border — where Highway 1 begins, at boundary marker 1116.
To stand at Huu Nghi is to stand at the start of Highway 1, the road that runs more than two thousand kilometres down to Ca Mau. Marker 1116, bearing both national emblems, sits in a wide forecourt backed by the customs complex, with container trucks crossing all day. The mood is both formal and busy: tour groups photographing the marker while, metres away, Vietnam–China trade never pauses. Lang Son city is barely seventeen kilometres back, close enough to add Ky Lua Market and Tam Thanh Cave to the same day.
