Pu Ta Leng

Vietnam's third-highest peak at 3,049m, famous for ancient rhododendron forest in bloom each March.

Pu Ta Leng stands at 3,049 metres, behind only Fansipan and Pu Si Lung, but unlike those two it has no cable car and probably will not for a long time. The climb takes two days through wet primary forest cut constantly by streams, then up into old rhododendron woods with trunks under thick moss. In March that forest flares red and pink and fallen petals cover the trail — which is why climbers call Pu Ta Leng the kingdom of rhododendrons. On the summit, with luck, the cloud parts to reveal the whole Hoang Lien Son range with Fansipan opposite.
