The largest prisoner-of-war camp in the south, now a memorial with reconstructed scenes.

At the southern end of the island, barely ten kilometres from the resorts, is where tens of thousands of prisoners of war were held — the largest such camp in the south, known locally as the Coconut Tree camp. The memorial today keeps the tin-roofed cell blocks, layers of barbed wire, watchtowers, and reconstructions in figures of the punishments carried out here, including the barbed-wire tiger cages: small outdoor enclosures too low to sit or lie in. This is a piece of history most visitors to Phu Quoc never learn, and it sits in harsh contrast with the resort-island image.
