Dinh Cau Shrine

A small shrine on a rock at the mouth of Duong Dong, where fishermen ask about the weather before sailing.

Dinh Cau stands on a natural rock outcrop right where the Duong Dong river runs into the sea, and for islanders it is the most sacred spot on Phu Quoc. The shrine honours Cau — in local belief the spirit who guards the river mouth — and fishermen climb up to burn incense and ask for a safe trip before every long voyage. A few dozen stone steps lead from the parking area to the shrine yard, and from there you look due west: this is one of the island's best-known places to watch the sun go down, because it sets straight out over the water in front of you. The Dinh Cau night market is directly below, so the two are usually done together.
