A night market in Duong Dong — seafood picked from the tank, fish sauce and island-farmed pearls.
The night market runs along a short street in Duong Dong beside Dinh Cau, and it is more or less the island's evening centre. Half of it is seafood restaurants: live tanks lined up across the frontages, you point at what you want and it is weighed and cooked on the spot — crab, mantis shrimp, sea urchin, grouper. The other half sells the island's three specialities: Phu Quoc fish sauce, pepper and farmed pearls. The fish sauce here is fermented in wooden barrels from anchovy caught around the island and carries its own geographical indication. It is crowded, loud and quotes high, but honest scales and posted prices are more common than not.
