The pavement beer street they call the 'international crossroads' — the Old Quarter at its loudest.

By day Ta Hien is an ordinary narrow lane among the thirty-six streets. From about seven in the evening it becomes something else: red plastic stools spilling across both pavements, packed so tight that walkers have to weave, and on those stools Hanoians sit mixed in with Western, Korean and Japanese visitors — hence the nickname, the international crossroads. The drink is bia hoi, fresh beer brewed and sold the same day, poured from a tap into thick glass tumblers at a price that seems impossible. It comes with fried fermented pork rolls, grilled chicken feet, roasted peanuts. Do not come here for quiet; come to see the Old Quarter at full volume.
