Seven centuries of pottery beside the Red River, where you can sit at a wheel and throw a bowl yourself.

Bat Trang has been making pottery since about the fourteenth century, and what made its name is white clay together with its distinctive crackle glaze — a glaze that cracks into a fine net as it cools, an effect the potters here produce deliberately rather than by accident. Bat Trang ware once travelled by trading junk across South-East Asia and to Japan. Walking the village now means narrow brick-paved lanes with round coal briquettes drying against the walls to fire the kilns, and workshops open for visitors to look in. Most have a wheel area for guests: you pay a small amount, sit down, ruin a few, and take home the one that survives after firing.
