The temple sits on a small island at the northern end of Hoan Kiem Lake, and to reach it you cross The Huc — the curved, red-lacquered wooden bridge on almost every Hanoi postcard. The name means the place that catches the morning sun, and it is true: at first light the bridge blazes red as the sun clears the trees. Inside, the temple honours Tran Hung Dao, the general who beat the Mongols three times, alongside Van Xuong, the deity of examinations, so students come to pray before exams all year round. A side room holds a preserved Hoan Kiem turtle, the creature tied to the legend of the returned sword that gives the lake its name.
