Pa Khoang Lake

A forest lake on the road to Muong Phang, near the Dien Bien Phu command post.

Pa Khoang lies in a closed valley in the forest, on the road into Muong Phang — where the command post of the 1954 Dien Bien Phu campaign was set up. The lake splits into arms winding between low forested hills, and thin mist often settles on the water in bands at first light. Around it are Black Thai and Kho Mu hamlets living from terraced fields and fishing. Take a boat across and walk into the Muong Phang forest and you find General Vo Nguyen Giap's working hut still standing under the canopy — nature and history a couple of kilometres apart.
