Dien Bien is the land that marks the 1954 Dien Bien Phu victory 'renowned across five continents and shaking the globe'. The complex of old battlefield relics — Hill A1, De Castries' bunker, the Victory Museum — is a sacred destination. Alongside this, Dien Bien also has the vast Muong Thanh plain, the magnificent Pha Din Pass and the vibrant culture of the Thai and Hmong amid the northwestern mountains.
Best time to visit: March–May; around 7 May for the victory commemoration
