FechTin Go · Vietnam · Ben Tre
A rookery on the Ba Lai river, formed in 1986 when an entire flock migrated here of its own accord.
Nobody founded Vam Ho: in May 1986 the birds of Cu Lao Dat simply left and chose this stand of date palm on the Ba Lai river as their new home. Since then its sixty-seven hectares of mangrove have become one of the most intact rookeries in Ben Tre. Take a sampan into the narrow channels and you hear the birds from every direction before you see a single one; only from the observation towers does the density of egret, night heron and ibis nests become clear. Dusk is the changing of the guard: egrets come in to sleep exactly as the night herons head out to feed.
