Myeongdong Street

Myeongdong Street — Seoul

Seoul's loudest shopping quarter, which turns into a street of open-air kitchens after dark.

By day Myeongdong is cosmetics: every shop hands out samples, staff call out in four languages from the doorways. At dusk food carts are wheeled into the middle of the street and the whole quarter changes smell — fiery red tteokbokki, cheese pulled into strings, crayfish grilled in garlic butter, hot gyeran-ppang egg bread. You eat standing up, napkin in hand, then move on. Above it all stands Myeongdong Cathedral in red brick, a quiet witness to the neighbourhood since 1898.
