The quarter around Hongik art university, where student bands set up amplifiers in the street and play until midnight.

Hongdae takes its name from Hongik University, Korea's most respected art school, and the whole quarter has the character of art students: graffitied walls, cafés in converted workshops, record shops, and street stages that appear the moment it gets dark. At weekends the pedestrian street outside the university gate fills with crowds watching cover dance crews and indie bands — plenty of well-known Korean acts started on exactly this pavement. The further you walk into the lanes towards Yeonnam-dong, the slower the pace gets: small bars, trees, and a long park built on a disused railway line.

Travel tips

Friday and Saturday nights have the most street performances.
For something quieter, head towards Yeonnam-dong or Sangsu-dong.
Hongik University station has many exits — exit 9 is closest to the walking street.
