Changdeokgung Palace & Secret Garden

A UNESCO-listed palace famous for bending to the shape of the hill instead of forcing the hill to bend to it.

If Gyeongbokgung was power on display, Changdeokgung was where the kings actually wanted to live — and they lived here longer than in any other palace. Rather than level the ground for a symmetrical axis, Joseon architects let the halls follow the slope, each roof at its own height. Behind them lies Huwon, the 'Secret Garden' of more than 30 hectares, open only by guided tour: a square pond for the earth, a round island for the heavens, and small pavilions where kings came to read. In autumn the whole garden turns copper.
