Muui Island & Hanagae Beach

An island right beside Incheon airport, where the tide retreats hundreds of metres and wooden huts stand on the sand.

Muui-do is so close to Incheon International that landing aircraft pass overhead, yet cross the bridge and the pace changes completely. Hanagae beach has an enormous tidal range: at low water the mudflat is exposed for hundreds of metres and people head out with buckets for clams and cockles; at high water the sea returns to the foot of the wooden huts built on the sand and rented out for the night. Behind the beach a trail climbs Horyonggoksan for a view over the whole archipelago. Since the bridge opened in 2019 you can simply drive across — no waiting for a ferry.

Travel tips

Check the tide table — the beach is only good at high water.
Bring boots and a bucket if you want to dig for clams at low tide.
It makes an excellent stop if you have a long layover at Incheon.
