Ganghwa Peace Observatory

Standing about two kilometres from the North Korean shore, close enough to watch people working the fields.

From the observatory at the northern tip of Ganghwa the Han opens into an estuary, and the far bank is Kaepung county in North Korea — near enough that the mounted binoculars show houses, power poles and people moving between fields. There is no barbed wire between the two, only water. Downstairs, an exhibition covers life in the North and the families separated by the border; outside stands an altar facing north, where elderly visitors make offerings to ancestors in a home village they have never been allowed to return to. Nowhere in Seoul makes the division this concrete.
