Hahoe Folk Village, Andong

A Confucian village wrapped in a loop of river, where the Hahoe masks were born.

The Nakdong River bends almost the whole way around Hahoe — the name means 'river turning'. Inside sits the village of the Ryu clan, its layout unchanged since the 15th century: tiled houses of the gentry among the thatched homes of tenants, mud walls, a shared well. People still live and farm here. The village is famous for the byeolsingut mask dance, a peasant satire in which even aristocrats could be mocked, and its wooden Hahoe masks are now national treasures.
