Sheep pasture on a 1,000-metre plateau — and the snow country of the 2018 Winter Olympics.

Cross the Daegwallyeong pass and the climate changes outright: a broad plateau, hard wind, grass to the horizon and white turbines turning slowly. The farms here raise sheep and dairy cattle and open their hills to visitors who walk up to feed hay to the flock. In winter the snow lies a metre deep — this is the region that hosted the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics, and the ski resorts run all season. On summer mornings mist fills the valley below while the hilltops are already in sun.
