A flat slab of rock the size of a football pitch mid-stream, covered in the carved names of old scholars.

Mureung — 'the valley of the immortals' — opens with an enormous white slab lying flat in the stream, wide enough to hold a thousand people. For centuries scholars passing through carved their names into it, and the surface is now dense with overlapping Chinese characters, a visitors' book written in stone. Deeper in the valley comes a chain of falls: Ssangpokpo, where two streams drop into the same rock pool, and Yongchupokpo at the end. The water runs green from the limestone and is bitterly cold even in August.
