Korea's largest coastal dune field, built by wind over fifteen thousand years into a small desert.

Sinduri is the largest coastal dune system in Korea — sand blown back inland off the beach by the north-west wind over some fifteen thousand years, heaped into hills up to twenty metres high running nearly four kilometres. Standing in the middle of it, with nothing but sand and marram grass around you, it is hard to believe you are still in Korea. It shelters species found only on dunes: sand sedge, dune beetles, sand lizards. A boardwalk crosses the core so nobody treads on the ecosystem, and a small freshwater lake sits just behind the dunes — an unusual thing in dune geomorphology.

Travel tips

Stay on the boardwalk; do not step onto the sand in the protected core.
The wind is fierce — bring sunglasses to keep sand out of your eyes.
Combine it with the Taean beaches and Taeanhaean Marine National Park.
