Oeam Folk Village, Asan

A six-hundred-year-old clan village with a channel of mountain water running through every yard.

Oeam belongs to the Yi clan of Yean, formed in the 16th century and holding almost exactly the layout of that time. What sets it apart is the water: the villagers led a stream down from Seolhwasan and split it into small channels running through each house's yard — to water the gardens, to guard against fire, and to cool the summer. You walk the village lanes and hear running water beside the stone walls the whole way. The village also holds Konggansa, a gentry house with a Confucian garden of square pond and round island. Around sixty households still live here, several making yeonyeopju rice wine the old way.
