Tomb of King Muryeong & Gongsanseong, Gongju

The only Baekje royal tomb whose occupant is known by name, found intact in 1971.

In 1971 workmen digging a drainage ditch in Gongju struck a brick vault. Inside lay the tomb of King Muryeong of Baekje, never robbed, holding more than four thousand objects: gold crowns thin as leaves, lacquered wooden headrests, and a stone tablet naming the king — which makes this the only Baekje tomb whose owner is certain. On the hill beside it, the earthen ramparts of Gongsanseong run in a circle above the Geum River.
