Sobaeksan National Park

A ridge covered in royal azalea in June, and an observatory on a summit because the sky here is the country's clearest.

Sobaeksan has a long ridge running between Chungbuk and Gyeongbuk, and the stretch around Birobong summit carries almost no tall trees — only grass and low royal azalea. In early June the whole ridge turns pink, and because it sits near fourteen hundred metres this is the latest azalea bloom in Korea, when everywhere else finished long ago. On another summit stands Sobaeksan Observatory, sited here for dry air, few clouds and distance from city light. In winter the wind along the ridge is strong enough that snow cannot settle, and is instead blown into horizontal ridges of ice.

The national park entry-time system applies: ascent opens at 04:00 (March–November) or 05:00 (December–February), and each section has its own turn-back time somewhere between 12:00 and 17:00. Check the trail-closure notices before setting out

Travel tips

The usual route is Huibangsa to Birobong, about five hours return.
Early June weekends are very busy for the azaleas.
The ridge is windy year-round — always carry a windproof layer.
