Gosu Cave, Danyang

A tight limestone cave of crawling and climbing, with formations named for a Buddha's hand and a lion.
Gosu is not the sort of cave with wide paths for pushchairs. The route runs over a kilometre but is narrow and low, with stretches where you stoop and steel stairs climbing almost vertically between levels. In return, the density of formations is such that many have their own names: the Buddha's hand, the lion, the stone waterfall, the monk's pagoda. The cave has three stacked levels and a stream still running through it, which means the formations are still growing. It holds about fifteen degrees year-round, and the humidity fogs a camera lens the moment you step in.
