Yongdusan Park & Busan Tower

A hill in the old quarter reached by outdoor escalator, topped by a tower over the whole harbour.

Yongdusan means 'dragon's head mountain', and it rises right in the middle of the old Nampo-dong quarter. You don't have to climb: a run of outdoor escalators lifts you to the top, where there is a paved plaza, pigeons and a statue of Admiral Yi Sun-sin. Busan Tower, 120 metres and built in 1973, has an observation deck taking in the whole port — the container cranes, the ferries to Japan, and the housing running up the hillsides behind. At the foot of the hill are Gukje market and BIFF Square, where film stars have pressed their handprints into the pavement.
