Vinh Trang Temple

Vinh Trang Temple — Tien Giang

Tien Giang's largest pagoda, mixing Asian and European architecture, with a gate mosaicked in porcelain shards.

From outside, Vinh Trang barely reads as a Vietnamese pagoda: Roman arches, French columns and Khmer ornament across the front, with a traditional three-bay timber hall behind. That mixture is a trace of early-1900s My Tho, a river city where Vietnamese, Chinese and Khmer craftsmen worked alongside French drawings. The triple gate is assembled entirely from broken porcelain, forming dragons, phoenixes and foliage that glitter in the sun. In the grounds stand three large Buddhas — Maitreya, Amitabha and the reclining Buddha — among trees, lotus ponds and old sao hardwoods.
