Bai Chay Bridge

Bai Chay Bridge — Quang Ninh

Jean-Pierre Dalbéra · CC BY 2.0

The longest single-plane cable-stayed span in the world when it opened in 2006.

Before 2006, crossing the Cua Luc strait at Ha Long meant a ferry and sometimes hours of queueing. Bai Chay bridge ended that, and it is a considerable piece of engineering: a single-plane cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 435 metres — the longest of its type in the world when it opened. Single-plane means all the stay cables gather into one row down the centre of the deck rather than two rows at the sides, which makes the bridge look slender and does not block the view out over the bay. At night it is lit and becomes part of the Ha Long view from shore.
