A black glass box on the bay — a museum of the coal country, and the building itself is the exhibit.

The Quang Ninh Museum is a box clad in glossy black glass standing right on the bay shore, designed by the architect Salvador Pérez Arroyo, its glass reflecting sky and water so the building changes all day. Inside, three floors take three themes: the natural world of Ha Long bay, with a large whale skeleton hung in the atrium; the history of the region from prehistory to the Tran dynasty; and a floor on the coal industry — the most distinctive part, with a full-size reconstructed mine gallery you walk into, complete with real machinery and miners' lamps. Quang Ninh is Vietnam's largest coal region and this museum tells that story seriously.
