Thien An Mountain

A flat-topped hill above the Tra Khuc river, likened to a seal pressed down from heaven.

From a distance Thien An is a squared-off block with a flat top like the face of a seal — the old description was 'heaven's seal pressed onto the Tra river', and it has been Quang Ngai's emblem for centuries. On the summit stands Thien An Pagoda from the late 17th century, keeping its bell and a Buddha well cut deep into the hill. Also on the summit is the grave of Huynh Thuc Khang, the scholar-patriot who served as acting president in 1946, laid facing the Tra Khuc. Stand at the edge late in the day and you see the city, the river reduced to sandbars in the dry season, and cane fields running to the foot of the hill.
