Hundred-Pillar House

A Hue-style timber house built in 1901 at Long Huu, its pillars and carving nearly untouched.

On an islet by the Vam Co river, a landowning family of the early 1900s brought craftsmen down from Hue — and they built in the imperial manner: a ruong-frame house on a Cong plan, yin-yang tiling, red hardwood columns joined by mortise and tenon rather than nails. 'Hundred-Pillar House' is the popular name; the real count is higher. The carving is what holds you: screens, purlins and beams cut through with flowers, birds and the four sacred animals, combining Hue court motifs with southern fruit and foliage. Descendants still live here, so it reads as a living house rather than a museum.
