A border commune at two thousand metres — the best-known cloud-hunting spot in the north-west.

Y Ty sits on the border, more than seventy kilometres of mountain road from Sa Pa, at about two thousand metres, and it is what Sa Pa was before the cable car: almost no large hotels, no walking street, only Ha Nhi villages of rammed-earth houses with thick thatched roofs like giant mushrooms. This is the north-west's most famous cloud-hunting place — the position and altitude keep cloud pooling in the valleys almost year-round, thickest in September and October. The road in is bad and long; that is exactly why the place has stayed as it is.
