A valley of terraced rice fields below Sa Pa, holding a field of carved ancient stones.

Muong Hoa runs south-east from Sa Pa, and it is the real reason people come up here: thousands of terraces stacked across both mountainsides, curving along the contours for more than ten kilometres, with the Muong Hoa stream in the bottom. The colour changes completely with the season — in May, when the terraces are flooded, the whole valley becomes a field of mirrors; in September the ripe rice turns it gold. Scattered among the fields is the Sa Pa ancient rock field: nearly two hundred boulders carved with human figures, field patterns and spiral motifs nobody has yet explained, now classified as a national heritage site.
