Ham Rong Mountain

A peak inside the town — half an hour's climb for the whole of Sa Pa and Fansipan.

Ham Rong is the rocky peak that rises directly behind the stone church in the middle of town, which makes it the one panoramic viewpoint in Sa Pa that requires going nowhere: buy a ticket at the gate, climb about thirty minutes up stone steps, and you reach the cloud yard at the summit. From there the whole town sits in its bowl below, the Muong Hoa valley beyond, and on a clear day the summit of Fansipan to the west. On the way up are orchid gardens, peach gardens and narrow rock clefts you have to turn sideways to get through. This is the thing to do on your first afternoon in Sa Pa.
