A Red Dao village known for herbal baths, and a ruined stone convent from the French period.

Ta Phin is about twelve kilometres north of town, a village of Red Dao and Hmong. What made its name is the herbal bath: dozens of forest plants boiled in a fragrant-wood tub, the water dark red, and soaking in it after a day on the mountain paths is something almost everyone who comes to Ta Phin tries. The village also embroiders brocade with the distinctive geometric patterns of the Dao. On the edge of the village stand the ruins of a stone convent built by French nuns in 1942 and abandoned only a few years later — now just mossy stone walls standing in the grass.
