Cat Cat Village

Cat Cat Village — Lao Cai

A Hmong village below Sa Pa, its name taken from the French word cascade.

Cat Cat is directly below the town, about thirty minutes' walk down, and the name is the French word cascade — waterfall — which stuck as the village name. This is a Black Hmong village that keeps its hemp weaving and indigo dyeing: hemp grows beside the path, the fibre is stripped and spun by hand, and the cloth is dyed in indigo vats and hung to dry along every fence. The village has been heavily developed for tourism — a ticket gate, a performance stage, added photo spots — so it no longer feels untouched. In exchange it is the most accessible village of all, and suits anyone not up to a long trek.
