A 1938 art déco station with three peaked roofs, and the steam engine of a lost rack railway.

Da Lat station opened in 1938 with three peaked roofs echoing the shape of Lang Biang mountain — or, by another reading, the roofs of a Central Highlands communal house — and was considered the handsomest station in Indochina. It was the terminus of the Phan Rang–Da Lat rack railway, one of only two such lines that ever existed, using a toothed rail to climb the steep gradient. The line was dismantled after the war and the engines sold to Switzerland. Today only a seven-kilometre stretch to Trai Mat still runs, pulled by diesel, but the station itself, with its stained glass and the steam engine displayed in the yard, is worth the visit.

Did you know
